Random Tidbits About Me
First and foremost, I am a geek. When I get into a hobby, I focus on it completely; I learn all the rules, nuances, and vocabulary so that I can have an in-depth conversation with an expert. I love technology, mostly for the ways that it eliminates repetitive tasks and allows people to connect. I love open source because it creates an open community that helps the software (and hardware) evolve into something useful and usable.
I am a connector. I love to get to know people, and connect them with the resources and support groups that they need. I also love to listen to other people’s experiences, try on new perspectives for size, and to learn from others.
A friend once told me, “You take your past experiences and distill them into healing potions.” As a child of two teachers, I take negative experiences, turn them into growth opportunities, and share what I’ve learned from those experiences with others. I love to help people learn, and to share my knowledge.
If I were a D&D character at work, I would be a dual-class ranger/cleric.
Personal
I’m happily married to Jamey Sharp, who is also a fellow geek. We have a house, garden, and two very cute cats. I reserve the right to post endlessly cute kitty pictures. 🙂
Social Media
Twitter, Google Plus, or LinkedIn: pick your poison.
No, I won’t add you on Facebook unless I’ve had a physical chat with you, and I think I’d like to have a chat with you again. My email is my first name at this domain.
Linux
I’ve been running Linux since 2003, mostly Debian and Ubuntu. I was a Linux kernel developer from 2006 to 2013. I’m the reason Linux had USB 3.0 support before any other operating system, including Windows. I no longer work on the Linux kernel. I’m the founder of Otter Tech LLC, a diversity and open source consulting firm.
Gardening
Since high school, I’ve always had a garden. I’m a garden geek, learning all about the science behind the plants and weather. I occasionally dabble in Arduino-based automated watering systems.
Bicycling
Jamey and I live in the lovely bike-friendly city of Portland, Oregon. We try to bicycle everywhere, or use mass transit to get around. We’ve done long-distance bike tours of both the New Zealand North Island, and the Oregon Coast.
Travel
I love to travel. I love to see new sights and talk to the locals about their culture. My mom instilled the travel bug in me; I went to Europe seven times before I graduated high school. Most American kids don’t get that kind of perspective, and I’m very grateful for my experiences.
My mom was into whirlwind tours that included all the sights; my dad was into going to Pubs and talking with the locals. I like my dad’s approach better. I believe that you can’t really get the flavor of a town until you spend at least three or four days in it, and that you can’t judge a country (or state) by one town. Whirlwind tours are not for me.
I love to go off the beaten path, away from the tourist attractions. I will always prefer nature to a mall. Places I’ve visited are too numerous to keep track of here.
Misc Hobbies
I have (or have in the past) dabbled in many hobbies:
- Sewing and cosplay
- Photography
- Dungeons & Dragons
- Writing short stories, fan fiction, and creating fanvids
- Scuba diving
- Building amateur rockets with PSAS
- Reading webcomics with Comic Rocket
I reserve the right to change hobbies without notice.
Hi! About the license you use for your photos, I understand that CC-BY-NC prohibits the non commercial use of a photo you made, but not of a derivative work based on it. If you intended to do so, I believe you should have used a CC-BY-NC-SA license.
Thanks for catching that, Fabio! My photos in my Flickr stream are already marked as CC-BY-NC-SA, but the blog post was inaccurate. Fixed now.
Dear Ms. Sharp,
As a newbie to Ubuntu and oldie to IT – I was surfing th’ Interwebz when it was punch cards an’ paper cuts- sadness at your having to flee the Linux Dev community. The behaviors you cite are wholly unprofessional, unnecessary and upsetting, even from a distance. It would not surprise me in the slightest if you get further pushback for putting the issue out there rather than constructive thoughts on mitigating the problem. Best to you and Mr. Sharp and hope good things come of this.
Hi Sarah,
as a Linux and FLOSS enthusiast, I just want to thank you so much for your awesome work and contributions. The world needs people like you and I hope your experience with some people will not make you leave the FLOSS community entirely.
All the best!
Dan
Hi Sarah,
Sorry to hear about the issues with Kernel Dev .. I agree with you.
I don’t care if a dev or maintainer has an IQ of 600 and eight fingers on each hand – inappropriate behaviour is unacceptable.
Keep an open mind about FLOSS communities – most of them are not like this ..

Hi
Great to know that you are a cyclist – i got to know about your work thro LINUX VEDA.
Are you planning to come to India ?
We are building a bicycle sharing application and would like to deploy the same in India.

I’m a Linux enthusiast and have used it extensively for business as well. Just wanted to say thanks for your contributions!
